My mom has always been one of my mentors. She hasn’t always understood the details of my professional life, but she fully understands my values and what I want to stay true to. The ideal mentor, from my perspective, is a “truth teller” and completely invested in your success. In other words, they don’t have a personal agenda. They care about you and your success enough to tell you the truth, even when you don’t always want to hear it. So, you might ask yourself, how do I find a mentor like that? In my own experience, they are not easy to find. But, the good news is that you don’t need a lot of them. Volume doesn’t matter as much as quality. And, by the way, they aren’t all at work or even in your professional circle.
